Elk and Bison Prairie

Most days in beautiful Kentucky are sunny and from spring to fall the temperatures are high. This allows a great variety of outdoor activities. But what, if it is a bit muggy with lower temperatures, and you don’t want to miss out on the great Kentucky outdoors?

Days like these are perfect to visit the Elk and Bison Prairie located in Land between the Lakes National Forest, where you will explore inside the comforts of your vehicle the 3.5 mile trail that leads through parts of the 700-acre park.

Bisons, elk and wild turkey are just a few of the animals that can be observed in their natural habitat, as they roam free like they did in these parts of the country hundred years ago.

While many of us enjoy the sun and heat, these animals often tend to rather stay in the shade of trees.

Our visit was a colder fall day. The scenery was painted in the most vibrant colors and the animals had started their rutting season. It was equally amazing and interesting for us and our 3 year old daughter, to spot these mighty mammals while the baby comfortably snoozed tucked in his car seat.

For safety reasons, it is not allowed to exit the vehicle in this enclosure, but there are a few spots where you can pull over without blocking the road. It also is common for vehicles to stop in the middle of the trail, to get a better and longer look or to photograph.

The trail ride goes by pretty fast but who is to say you can only ride it once? Regardless, this is a perfect half day trip that is enjoyable for old and young. And for only $5 per vehicle, this inexpensive adventure can be gone on through out the year.
